Jason Bard, in a pastiche of the old hardboiled detective style, narrates a visit from Babs, but she punctures his 1930s and 40s movie obsession, telling him their relationship can’t move forward, but she has a job for him - tailing Dinah, but the case starts a thousand years ago.

At a beach vacation area, Jason recognizes Dinah from a previous adventure, while still musing on his feelings for Babs, and tries to approach subtly, but fails miserably when Dinah recognizes him. They exchanged pleased greetings, Dinah thrilled with his returned vision, and they head off to catch up. Jason relates Babs’ slamming the door on a romance between them, and Dinah shares news of a mysterious new man in her life - but that man’s employees call her away to dinner, and three men move in to attack him. He takes them out with some difficulty, and surmises that the attack is connected to Dinah somehow. Calling Babs up, he demands more information, and she says Dinah’s time travel romance left her vulnerable, but she doesn’t feel able to help her partner directly.

The next day, Jason takes the audiovisual gear Babs sent him on his surveillance mission, starting with a scuba exploration to put a bug on Dinah’s man’s ship, but he’s attacked by underwater muscle - much more dangerous than the thugs last night, including a dangerous woman. He manages to surface, but is captured by the man, revealed as none other than Ra’s al Ghul, who orders his men to kill Jason!
