Jonah Hex was offered a job performing in a circus by Miss Sally who hired and befriended many freaks and special people. The circus performers loved Sally for she was the only normal person who acted kind to them and they would've done anything for her. Ring master, Hannibal Pike, took advantage of that by making the special people do robberies under the idea that it was for keeping the poor performing circus from going bankrupt while he actually pocketed the money. Sally almost found out his scheme so in desperation Pike killed her which angered the freaks so they fed him to the lions.
