Shining the Light on Wonder Woman: Outlaw
The Amazonian Warrior versus… the King of America??
Whether you love Wonder Woman or have never read her stories, this is the book for you. A wonderful continuation of her story while being a perfect jumping-on point, this Eisner-nominated series is my absolute favorite of the last year.
So, what’s it about? When an Amazon kills nineteen Americans in a bar, it becomes the core of the national conversation. As anti-Amazon hate spirals out of control, the U.S. government decides to deport and prosecute all Amazons. Diana asks how a relatively small incident has created the mass outrage and targeted violence it has, which leads her on a journey to come face to face with the secret king of America. And if there’s one thing Wonder Woman always does, it’s find the truth.
Still building, this series is also working towards introducing a major new character to the DCU in Wonder Woman’s new daughter, Trinity. Introduced in the collected prelude for this run, Lizzie Prince is the Wonder Woman of the future that’s the core to everything happening in the present day. The back-ups in Wonder Woman (to be collected separately) have been a ton of fun showing how Lizzie grows up with the Super Sons, but this series sets the ground for how she will come into the world.
Every issue of this run is a complete story in itself, working to tell the overarching story. Every issue also highlights an aspect of Diana’s personality, digging into the complexities of the most compassionate warrior in history.
Tom King has been my favorite writer for years and this is my favorite of his works. Daniel Sampere came to this title fresh off of DC’s Dark Crisis, bringing his gorgeous talents to a character that deserves them. Tomeu Morey’s colors give the book the perfect blend between realistic and comic. Clayton Cowles’ lettering perfectly illustrates the tone of each panel. These are the best creators in the industry, doing the best work of their careers.
Wonder Woman: Outlaw collects a story from Wonder Woman #800 and Wonder Woman #1-6, the first chapter in Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s run on the Princess of Themyscira for only $19.99, with a main cover by Sampere and a direct market exclusive by Artgerm.
This title is astonishing. It’s bombastic, courageous, and topical. It’s kind, heart-breaking, and dynamic. It’s wonderful. It has my highest recommendation.
Thanks for reading!
