Gail Simone’s witty, human writing with David Marquez’s beautiful, human art.
What more could you want?! The “From The Ashes” X-Men relaunch has its second tentpole title this week with Uncanny X-Men #1, bringing together a much more traditional team than the one in X-Men. Wolverine, Rogue, Gambit, Nightcrawler, and Jubilee are facing the death of mutants, and none of them seem to know what to do–except stop it.
I hinted at it in the opening line, but this book really is about humans. It’s about the relationships we form, about making these characters feel like humans. Something that this issue really excels at is feeling comfortable while approachable: it’s obvious that these characters know, love, and respect each other.
This book does something that always makes me happy in superhero books, where it shows what it would be like for people to actually have these abilities. There’s a moment with Wolverine in this issue that really puts you in the room with them.
Gail Simone’s writing really shines here, pairing wonderful character moments with big action. David Marquez makes everything feel real and fantastical at the same time, with Matt Wilson’s colors rooting you in the world while showing how bright it can be. And Clayton Cowles is the best letterer in the business.
Uncanny X-Men is on-sale August 7th for 5.99, and it’s the perfect place to look for that classic X-Men feel, even though nothing about the status quo is classic. There are big consequences to the fall of Krokoa, and the vile new villain appearing here is going to make you angry.
This is a book that’ll leave you sitting with the characters, with those moments really being the shining star. There’s a Wolverine page in this issue that reads like a punch in the gut, and I’m really excited to see where they’re going with him in particular.
What’re you all thinking about the X-Men relaunch? Let us know when you stop in to grab Uncanny this Wednesday!
Thanks, as always, for reading,-Lukas
