Two quick things about me:
Batman is–without any doubt or opposition–my favorite character in all of fiction.
I don’t really like Elseworlds stories, as a concept.
Everything set me up to dislike this book and I loved it. For fans of Ultimate Spider-Man (old or new) this is that version of Batman. What if Bruce was created today, with modern sensibilities and ideas, but was also influenced by the eighty-five years of Gotham already published? What if you took everything–money, the alley, Alfred, the training–away from Batman, who would he be?
They couldn’t have picked a better creative team to answer those questions. Scott Snyder brings his complete understanding of Batman together with his horror sensibilities to rebuild Bruce Wayne from the ground up, asking what would make for a modern Batman. Nick Dragotta draws every panel (some pages have seventeen!) to perfection, it’s the absolute best work of his career. Frank Martin colors in a way that makes the world pop while receding into itself, vibrant but dark. Clayton Cowles, also lettering the main Batman title, helps you feel the difference in this new world.
For Batman fans, this is Year One and Dark Knight Returns all at once with a whole new core. You’ll see what I mean when you read it, but… it’s two of the best Batman stories wrapped up in each other. By the best modern Batman writer.
For comic fans, this is not something you’re going to want to miss. This will change the industry in a loud way for years to come, and you should just get in on the ground floor while you can. This is a great place for new readers and relapsed readers alike.
I’m trying not to give too much away, because this is just a book that should be left to speak for itself. It’s a book that’s best read knowing next-to nothing going in. But, I get that’s a big ask, so here’s my vague elevator pitch: a Batman that grew up on Crime Alley and an Alfred that never left the military find each other in the most violent Gotham we’ve seen.
This is the talk of the industry right now and, as I’ve been saying, it sold out two weeks before it was released. Get to the shop TODAY to get your copy, we are going to sell out–and the second print isn’t out for a whole month. It’s 42 pages (almost two issues worth) of an amazing story for $4.99. You want to know what’s going on with this one.
They do some really, really cool things with the reinvention of Gotham and none of them are changes for the sake of change. It’s all wrapped up in this core idea of a modern, violent Gotham… and it all works so, so well. Don’t take my word for it, check it out–I’m very excited to hear what everyone thinks after reading this one.
My ABSOLUTE thanks for reading,
-Lukas
