I’m not the biggest Wonder Woman fan in the world. I don’t love this book just because it’s Diana or just because I have a huge reverence for Wonder Woman. I love this book because it’s excellent, and I love Wonder Woman because of this book.
Wonder Woman #14 is a perfect jumping-on point to my favorite series at the moment. It’s bold, loud, and personal in a way that’s stunningly pulled off by the whole creative team. This Wonder Woman run has, to me, been what superheroes are all about: the hero standing strong against challenges that seem impossible to overcome with a smile.
But this issue takes the smile away.
This issue is a meditation on loss and love. It answers the question of what happens when the most compassionate warrior in the world loses someone she loves most, and what you can do with all of those emotions. This issue is a self-contained story that launches the future of Wonder Woman forward, which makes it the perfect issue to give a shot.
Tom King brilliantly makes a complicated story structure simply gut-wrenching with the continuation of his Eisner, Ringo, and Harvey-nominated run. Daniel Sampere, the amazing artist of the Superman side of DC All In, does thirty pages of gorgeous, crushing art. Tomeu Morey’s colors pull you into the dread and carry you out by the end while Clayton Cowles’ letters pull you through each panel.
I know I’ve said this a lot recently, but this is one you should just read for yourself. Try this issue and, if you somehow don’t like it, then this just isn’t the book for you, and that’s a-okay. But I really think you’ll love it. It might be the best issue of the run so far. It’s $4.99, oversized, one of my favorite issues of the year, and on sale NOW!
Give this book a shot, you won’t be disappointed. It’s a deeply personal story on the grandest scale imaginable, it’s a wonderful superhero comic that feels distinctly its own. Here’s a four page preview that says more than I ever could:

P.S! Our Lighthouse Keepers got a copy of Batman and Robin: Year One #1 this week, my second favorite book of the week and one you’re definitely going to want to check out. We had a ton of damages on the book, but our Lighthouse Keepers still got their free copies. As if you needed another reason to subscribe to next month’s Lighthouse Keeper!
