It tells the story of Tuor and his encounter with the sea-god Ulmo, who set him on the path to the legendary elven city of Gondolin, and that of Túrin, tragic hero of the First Age who escapes the curse of Morgoth to wander as an outlaw until the time he could avenge his people.

Here is the only surviving story from the long ages of Númenor, the greatest kingdom of men, before its downfall at the hands of Sauron, and all that is known of the five wizards, emissaries of the gods in Middle-earth. Also contained here are the stories of Isildur's temptation and despair after cutting the Ring from Sauron's hand, Gandalf's account of sending Thorin and his dwarves to Bag-End, and the journey of the Ringwraiths during their hunt for the One Ring.
