O-Kay, it’s on!! If you’ve been looking for something different to do during this pandemic, how about rooting around, doing a little research, and enter our Scavenger Hunt/ Trivia Contest! Entry forms are now available in the shop (no promises, but I’m going to see if I can actually upload them here).
There are 50 items that you will try to find and 25 trivia questions to answer. The deadline for turning in your entry with the questionnaire filled out and items found is Labor Day – plenty of time! Be sure to read the directions carefully.
There will be one winner and that person will receive a copy of Walking Dead # 100. What makes this an extra special issue, besides being number 100, it features the first appearance of Negan and Lucille! And… it’s not just any copy, but a CGC graded copy that came through as a 9.8! We figured that with the recent well received “Negan Lives” issue and the start of the entire WD series being released in color with new material this Fall, it was a natural. Have fun and Good Luck!
As this is being typed, Captain Blue Hen Comics may be participating in the NJCC Tri-State Travel Con on Sunday, August 2nd. Look for an announcement. Google it, also. It will not be as big as one of our Flea Market & Collectibles Shows, but will be held in the parking lot, probably only 9 AM – noon. My understanding is that the sponsors hope to have a number of spots all over the upper Delaware, Southeast Pennsylvania, and Southern New Jersey area with a map and description of what one might find at each location.
Regarding the Labor Day Flea Market, our hopes are to have it. We will keep one parking space between each vendor and ask that all involved wear masks and practice social distancing. Past vendors will be contacted in about two weeks to judge interest.
This past Sunday, I attended the a2z Promotions Card & Collectibles Show that was held in the Millcreek Fire Hall (same place as the First State Comic Con). I was curious to see if people would show up during this mess and if they would follow CDC guidelines. The promoter did not have as many tables as one finds at the FSCC as he did not have tables butt up to each other and gave more room behind the tables, essentially eliminating one entire row. All of the vendors and attendees DID wear masks, but social distancing really wasn’t happening. There were more people in attendance than I expected – cabin fever? Besides curiosity, I wanted to see if comic book people were either set up. Nope! Not a one! In fact, the only comic I saw was a copy of “The Undertaker” comic. I guess it wouldn’t serve me to try and set up there during the next show on 8/30.
If you read my blog from a little while ago – “Price This Book”, you remember me reiterating my frequent observations of low grade, even REALLY low grade, keys and golden age comics selling for many times guide. I believe the Overstreet does not accurately reflect this market. The example that I gave in that blog was a copy of Detective Comics 122 that was given a 0.5 by CGC. It sold for $985.03. Guide price for a 4.0 is $918. Well, guess what? The same copy was not paid for by the winner of the auction, so the eBay seller (blissard) listed it again. It sold last week for $1,112.89 this time?! Still awaiting this Summer’s edition of the Overstreet – must reading.
