Cue the music in your head, folks. (If you don't hear Freddie, I don't know what to say)
I know, I know, I sound like a broken record, but records are meant to be broken. In case you missed it, a copy of Action Comics #1 set the new high - again. This time – 3.25 million dollars!
ComicConnect.com, which I believe is part of Metropolis Comics out of New York, announced that they just sold a copy graded 8.5 in a private sale. This same comic was purchased by the seller for a little over 2 million in 2018. Not a bad profit for owning it less than 3 years! The previous record of 3.2 million was for a 9.0 sold in 2014 at auction. There is at least one other 9.0 copy out there. Wonder what the market would bring today.
That wasn’t the only record set this past month through ComicConnect. They sold a record for the grade CGC 4.0 copy of Batman #1 for $170,000. A CGC 3.0 copy of Superman #1 sold in their December auction and brought $310,111 plus a CBCS 1.5 copy sold in their store for $95,000. They also sold in their marketplace a copy of More Fun 73 (CGC 8.0), featuring the first appearances of Aquaman and Green arrow for $100,000! And it’s not just golden age comics setting new highs – they recently sold a CGC 9.8 DareDevil #1 for a cool quarter of a million dollars!! To demonstrate what a mere difference of “.2” can make at the upper end, a CGC 9.6 brought only half that amount – still!! I wonder what Comic Connect makes on these deals?
And, yes, that is me holding an authentic copy of Action Comics #1. But, no, it wasn’t mine! A good friend allowed me the honor of actually holding one and what a thrill it was – evidenced by the silly grin on my face. Over the years, I have personally owned two different copies of Superman #1, two different copies of Batman #1, had 5 copies of Hulk #1 at the same time, but never the holy grail of comics.
However, getting back down to earth, more and more of us have or will be getting our vaccine shots soon. Things WILL return to close to normal. Might we see one of our famous Captain Blue Hen Comics outdoor flea market/collector shows in the near future? Stay tuned!
