It’s about 10:30 AM on Saturday the 29th as I’m typing this and it looks like the snow is tapering off. We didn’t get hit too bad up here in Northern New Castle County, but I know lower Delaware got clobbered.
Evidently, regardless of how much they get in New York City, Mike Carbonario’s “Big Apple Trading Card Show” will be a go - at least according to the email I received. Mike is quite a character and has been around pushing comics as long, if not longer, than me. He was set up at the Phil Seuling shows in NYC when I was doing them in the mid 70s.
I know you ain’t going to the Big Apple today, but you do have a chance to go there in the near future if you win an auction. ComicConnect is going to have an auction starting February 10th where the winner gets an all expense paid trip to NYC to meet and have dinner with the great Neal Adams AND receive a one-of-a-kind special comic of his!! For more info, click RARE 1-OF-1 NEAL ADAMS COMIC COMING TO AUCTION + ALL-EXPENSE-PAID TRIP AND DINNER WITH NEAL ADAMS IN NYC (Click To Watch Video).
Let’s face it – you and I don’t have a prayer of being high bidder. I would have preferred they had made is so that us “little guys” had a chance. Perhaps they could have offered each person who ordered a copy of a special variant (say one only available to contest participants?) of the comic (and for a more modest amount – say $100) a chance to win this prize? I don’t know what they expect to bring in doing it by auction, but I would assume they could generate a decent amount this way, also. Just saying.
Oh, well, one can dream. Anyway, still checking out auctions online and the results show that the collectibles market is still going strong- even low grade, incomplete issues, as I’ve mentioned before.
Check these the prices that these single pages have gotten. CGC doesn’t give pages a grade, just a “PG” which basically says, “yeah, it’s real”
BATMAN #1 page 12 only - $2,499; the centerfold - $5,777; the splash page - $8,899!
AMAZING FANTASY #15 pg 6 - $3,312; pg 3 - $3,850; pg 2 - $5,100; splash page - $3.551; and another splash page just went for $9,495!
Okay, not a fan of single pagers, how about a CGC 3.5 copy of HULK 181 bringing in $1,825? According to Mr. Overstreet, a 4.0 should be around $1.600. How about an 8.0 copy of HULK # 1 going for $188,000 while the guide shows $58,000?! Oh, and a 9.0 almost brought a half mil!! No bargains to be found. As I asked before, will the new guide reflect major jumps? We’ll have to watch and see.
Darn, looks like the snow is done. Heading out to clean off the cars and do some shoveling. Here’s hoping the weather man got it right and it’s fluffy, light snow. Bengay, either way!
