Welcome to our new blog! What's it about!? Excellent question...moving on...
One of my goals in the new year is to read more comics! It's way too easy in this business to get so busy with the business of selling comics, you're left with precious little time to actually enjoy comics. But I'm determined, dammit! First up!? Strange Adventures by Tom King.
King has been one of my favorite writers for a while now, and if you haven't read Mister Miracle yet, then we've failed you as a comic book store! Seriously, it's one of the best books in our stores. And Strange Adventures is almost as good...almost. Adam Strange is one of my all-time favorite characters, even if he's more than a little derivitive of Buck Rogers, visually at the very least. But a cool concept and a cool-looking character. King really gets what is cool about the concept, and applies it to a real-world scenario, ala Zack Snyder. What gets lost in the translation is the sense of hope and optimism inherent in Adam Strange, inevitable when the story is juxtaposed against the real-life horrors of war, even an interplanetary one. Sadder still, the best modern take on our classic notion of Adam Strange, Andy Diggle and Pasquel Ferry's Adam Strange: Planet Heist, is out of print. If we have the individual issues in store, grab em; it's a good read. And the classic stories are in print in the Adam Strange Silver Age Omnibus; available for order if you don't see it on the shelf.
That's my two-minute review of Strange Adventures; it's good, but it broke my Adam Strange-loving heart. Til next time, nerds!
