After dragging my feet for months, (more like years), I finally committed to recording a comic book store podcast with the other members of my team.
This is no easy feat, as we need to record it after business hours and coordinate 3-4 different schedules.
I've done comic book video recommendations since 2007 or so. And I repurposed some of those as podcasts over the years.
It started as Alter Ego Comics TV.
Then it became Comics Are Awesome.
And now I give you, Alter Ego Comics Presents.
I'm taking inspiration from both DC Comics Presents and Marvel Comics Presents, two comic book series from the 1970's and 1980's.
My goal with the Alter Ego Comics Presents podcast is to give you a behind the scenes look at what it’s like owning/working in a comic book store, along with new comic book recommendations and commentary about the comics industry.
Our first episode was released on January 24, 2020, and highlighted our top selling single issue comic books and graphic novels.
Top selling single issues:
1. Absolute Carnage #1
2. Absolute Carnage #2
3. Powers of X #1
4. Detective Comics #1000
5. House of X #6
6. Powers of X #2
7. Doomsday Clock #12
8. House of X #1
9. House of X #3
10. Tales from the Dark Multiverse: Batman Knightfall
One of the interesting things that we noticed about this list is that eight titles were part of mini-series’ and two of them were one-shots.
There are no ongoing titles in our Top 10.
Kind of sad, but as you’ll hear in the podcast, it makes sense.
Top selling graphic novels:
1. Batman: White Knight
2. Umbrella Academy Volume 1
3. Stranger Things Volume 1
4. Umbrella Academy Volume 2
5. Super Mario Adventures Graphic Novel
6. Batman: The Killing Joke
7. Rick & Morty vs Dungeons & Dragons Volume 1
8. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Volume 1
9. Batman Damned
10. Civil War
Once again, this list is made up of mini-series.
What does this mean? I don’t know, but it’s an interesting discussion topic.
Wonder Woman #750 Celebrates The Past, Present & Future of the Amazing Amazon
The big new release at the comic book store the week of this episode was Wonder Woman #750.
It features nine new stories and should be a satisfying read for any Wonder Woman fan.
The highlights for me included:
* “From Small Things, Mama” by Gail Simone and Colleen Doran
* “The Interrogation” by Mariko Tamaki and Elena Casagrande
* “Never Change” by Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott
The final story is by Scott Snyder and Bryan Hitch and is supposed to the be the first in a series establishing the definitive history of the DC Universe. And in this history, Wonder Woman was the first super hero to appear!
You should be able to find the graphic novels listed above, along with Wonder Woman #750 and the other comics that we discuss at your local comic book store.
If you can't, you can always order them from us :)
And you can find the Alter Ego Comics Presents podcast here.
I hope that you will give it a listen.
